Just as the month of June brings pain and pride to the Sikh nation, so does the month of May to the Tamils across the world.  It comes as a deep relief to any affected nationality when stalwarts of another nation stand up for them. Last week, a Member of the Provincial Parliament of Ontario -Gurratan Singh, stood up in the house and narrated how the government of Sri Lanka executed its genocidal plan against Tamils a decade back. WSN brings the speech of Gurratan Singh to its readers.

WORLDWIDE,  TAMILS ARE OBSERVING the month of May as Genocide Remembrance week and 18 May as the day to recall the genocidal killing of Eelam Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Like Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the NDP party in Canada, his brother Gurratan Singh has also taken on the mantle of highlighting human rights violations not just limited to Canada but across the world.

Gurratan Singh, in his speech, painstakingly dwelt on the tragedy that happened 12 years back and reiterated that the international community must take note of this and fulfil its responsibility to the Tamils.

He said, “For decades Tamils have faced a state-sponsored genocide carried out by the Sri Lankan government.” He said that the Sri Lankan government has resorted to cultural genocide in attempts to wipe out the language, culture and way of living of the Tamil people.

Conservative liberal writer and supporter of the Kurdistan struggle for independence Mem Husêdin, has reacted to the tweet of Gurratan Singh, saying, “ I was there until almost the last stand against the occupation of Tamil Eelam. Tamils fought bravely to defend their land but the enemy came with no discrimination against civilians. China was the main supporter of the Sinhala government and the UN was complicit in the crimes.”

Speaking to World Sikh News, Naam Tamilar Katchi leader Seeman humbly remarked that “I am happy to know that more Sikh leaders are joining the chorus of protests against Sinhalese terror against Tamils.”

Dr Paul Newman, Head of the Human Rights department at Bangalore University has welcomed the speech of Gurratan Singh. Speaking to WSN, he said, “Human rights concern, especially a concern for genocide should know no geographical boundaries.  Tamils are privileged to have the concern of Sikh leaders in Punjab and Canada.”

This is not the first time that Gurratan Singh has taken up the cause of the Tamils. Last year too he had tweeted along with Tamil activists.

In this year, when the Sikhs are celebrating the 400 Years of Guru Tegh Bahadur, it is more than relevant that Sikh leaders are standing up for the rights of people and nationalities, without any discrimination.
