Rudrapur, Haldwani and Kichha Gurdwara committees in Uttarakhand stand committed to celebrating Guru Gobind Singh Gurpurab on 5 January which they have been doing for the last four years.

Nearly 10 Gurdwaras in Rudrapur, 2 in Haldwani and 2 in Kichha have decided to continue their 4 years practice of celebrating Gurpurab of Guru Gobind Singh Ji on 5 January as per Mool Nanakshahi calendar.

On the phone line from Rudrapur, Balwinder Singh -general secretary of Sri Guru Singh Sabha,  Dashmesh Nagar Awas Vikas said, “We will continue doing what we have been doing for the past years as we do not intend to confuse our Sangat in any way. All Gurdwaras in Rudrapur will celebrate the Gurpurab at Sri Guru Singh Sabha Dashmesh on 23 Poh, that is 5 January as per the collective decision of all Gurdwaras.” He further said that as per his information most Gurdwaras in the state of Uttarakhand would be joyously celebrating the day on this day.

We are distributing literature and popularising the Nanakshahi calendar in urban and rural areas which has an overwhelming presence in villages of Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar and around.

The Gurdwara Committees in Rudrapur city which are part of this decision are Sri Guru Singh Sabha Dashmesh Nagar Awas Vikas, Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gole Market, Sri Guru Singh Sabha Adarsh Colony, Sri Guru Singh Sabha Milakh, Sri Guru Singh Sabha Indira Colony, Sri Guru Singh Sabha Jagatpura, Sri Guru Singh Sabha Kichha and Sri Guru Singh Sabha Brar Colony. Gurdwara Nanak Darbar Kichha, Dera Kar Sewa Kichha and Dera Kar Sewa Nanakpuri Tanda Kichha are also in agreement with this collective decision. Sri Guru Singh Sabha Haldwani and Gurdwara Guru Nanakpura Haldwani in Nainital district have also decided to celebrate Dasam Pita Gurpurab on 5 January.

IT professional and general secretary of the Sikh Youth Organisation of Rudrapur, Pritpal Singh told this reporter that promotional efforts are afoot to apprise the nearly fifteen thousand Sikh Sangat of Rudrapur of the significance and importance of adopting the Mool Nanakshahi calendar. He said, “We are distributing literature and popularising the Nanakshahi calendar in urban and rural areas which has an overwhelming presence in villages of Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar and around.” He further said that a full scale campaign is on and we hope for full implementation of the Mool Nanakshahi calendar in the coming months.

It is also learnt that there are a couple of Gurdwara committees who have not joined the majority Sangat but they have been left aside while efforts are being made to make them also join the movement for universal implementation of the Nanakshahi Calendar.
