Sikhs upset over Canada’s purported terrorism threat, says Dal Khalsa
In a sharp reaction to the Public Safety Report on terrorism threat to Canada, Sikh body Dal Khalsa has urged the Canadian government to withdraw the portion that makes urges Canadian Government to withdraw the baseless mention of Sikh (Khalistani) extremism in the 2018 Public Safety Report on the Terrorism threat to Canada.
The Public Safety Canada 2018 report made public two days ago has received sharp reactions from Sikhs in Canada and homeland Punjab.
Expressing surprise and disappointment at the move of the Canadian government, Dal Khalsa leader Harcharanjit Singh Dhami said Justin Trudeau’s government has committed a gross error in maligning the Sikh image apparently under influence of Indian government’s false propaganda. Canada’s move amounts to stereotyped profiling of Sikhs, he added.
“We did not expect from Trudeau Government that it would toe the Indian line so easily. “If the Canadian government thinks that by doing so it will be able to placate the Modi dispensation, it is mistaken”, said the Dal Khalsa leader. Moreover Canada should not set a stage to lose the overwhelming love of the Sikh community showered on the Prime Minister, his family and his entourage during their visit to Darbar Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple in early February this year.
“The Indian media, always on the offensive to show Sikhs seeking right to self-determination in a poor light, has already started describing the 2018 Public Safety Report as a course correction to put India-Canada ties on track.” It is surprising that the Canadian government did not learn from how the Indian media covered Justin Trudeau’s visit.
The Canadian government has missed a golden opportunity to dislodge the baseless concerns of Indian state regarding the threat to its integrity from Canadian Sikhs supporting the cause of right to self-determination in Punjab, he observed.
