Akhand Paath by Sikh Youth in Indonesia

Sikh youngsters replace regular paathis and do Akhand Paath with love and aplomb, not only enjoying reading Gurbani but learning from it too.

Generally, Akhand Path is conducted by paathis. For the first time in Indonesian Sikh history, in September 2016, an Akhand Path was conducted by youth at Gurdwara Sahib Selattan.  It took approximately 55 hours to complete the continuous recitation. It took more time than usual as kids were reading it.

This effort by the Gurmat School Jakarta students imbued Sikhi Sidak in our lives. This also solved another problem.  This enabled many to come to the Gurdwara Sahib to listen to Gurbani and not just come to Gurdwara Sahib, have Guru ka Langar and go away.  It created a renewed interest in the Sikh way of life.

Therefore, to bring Sikhi back into the lives of the present generation, such distinctive efforts need to be made regularly. Amazingly, since then, the G S Selatan youth have done several Akhand Paaths for several occasions such as, Gurpurab Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Gurpurab Guru Gobind Singh Ji, and Vaisakhi. We shall continue this. In the upcoming Akhand Paath that will be held at Gurdwara Sahib Selatan, the youth will be the paathis.  In future, there will be more Gurmat School students who will be able to do this sewa.

Every week, the Gurmat school’s students are active in the Gurdwara program, doing the duties of distribution of Karah Parshad, reading announcements and also loudly and devotedly reading  Dadda-Data (eating prayer) followed by the sangat during distribution of Langar.

I hope every Punjabi kid will have the opportunity to study Gurmukhi, to speak and understand Punjabi, to know about Sikh history and other Gurmat teachings like other students of the Jakarta Gurmat School.  We are who we are, no matter where we live, we still have to know and understand our identity as a Sikh. As teenagers, we have the responsibility to know all about Sikhism, because we have to teach our children and pass on the knowledge and spirit to the next generation –Babanian Kahanian Putt sputt karen.
