Bombay High Court to hear Kirpan issue petition against ZERO on 30 Nov

The petition filed by activist lawyer Amritpal Singh against the objectionable scene in Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero will come up for a pre-admission hearing in the Mumbai High Court on 30 November, when the CBFC is expected to either file a reply or accept the objection and remove the scene where Shah Rukh Khan is wearing Kirpan -the Sikh faith symbol.

The complaint filed by Singh Sabha Mumbai with the Central Board of Film Certification is also pending with the body and so far they have not responded in any manner.

While Sikh circles in Punjab and Delhi are quiet on the subject and the first complainant in the matter Delhi MLA Manjinder Singh has “accepted” the explanation of the Zero film-makers, young Advocate Amritpal Singh has remained steadfast and pursued the matter in the Bombay High Court.

It is likely that all 10 respondents, including the hero, the producers and director of the movie, as well as channels who are broadcasting the trailer and showing slides of the impugned poster will file their written replies on the the date or their counsels will appear in person.

Speaking exclusively to World Sikh News, petitioner Amritpal Singh said, “The matter is subjudice, let us see how the respondents react and reply on the date of hearing.” He further clarified that, “The Kirpan scene must be deleted and Shah Rukh Khan and the makers must apologize to the Sikh community for the hurt caused. Other than that, there are no issues.”

The movie ZERO is slated for release on 21 December and a huge amount of money is at stake. Film circles are agog that Shah Rukh Khan cannot stake the success of his movie on an absolutely unnecessary scene and in all likelihood the producers would delete the scene. It is a wait and watch game for the moment.
