Delhi Court orders 2 lumpens guilty of Nov 1984 Hardev Singh killing

In a “better late than never” historic judgement, judge Ajay Pandey at the Patiala House courts, New Delhi held Yashpal Singh And Naresh Sherawat guilty for massacre of Sikhs in November 1984. As soon as they were sentenced, they were taken into custody by the police. Both are likely to be given their prison terms on 15 November.

Hardev Singh along with Avtar Singh was killed in the Mahilpur area whereas the shops of their friends Sangat Singh and Kuldip Singh were set afire.

Significantly justice in this 34 year-old case was possible after the intervention of the DSGMC, which pursued the case in 2015 with the present government. Earlier on, though Hardev Singh’s brother had brought the case to the notice of the Ranganath Mishra Commission but he was overawed and threatened by the accused. An FIR was registered in April 1993 in the case only upon the intervention of the Justice J. D. N and D. K. Agarwal committee recommendations.

It must be narrated that justice has been possible in the case because the witnesses Trilok Singh, Sangat Singh and Kuldip Singh deposed without fear.

DSGMC president Manjit Singh GK and general secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa, while welcoming the judgement have said that there is need to pursue many FIRs and the DSGMC will continue its endeavours in this direction.

Manjit Singh GK further said that the prime accused in this case, a Congress leader called JP, is still beyond the clutches of the law and that DSGMC would appeal for his prosecution to a higher court.
