Delhi High Court orders DSGMC polls with revised 37 year-old-voter list

Delivering a judgement today, reserved since 18 September, rejecting the Badal Dal plea for fresh electoral rolls, Justice Jayant Nath of the Delhi High Court has ordered that the elections to the general house of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, be held prior to 31 March 2020, with revision of the 37-year-old electoral rolls under which the elections were held on the past two occasions, even though the Directorate of Gurdwara Elections, Government of Delhi, had wilfully not followed Delhi High Court and Supreme Court orders since 2012.

Disposing of a clutch of petitions, including the main petition of the Badal Dal seeking making of fresh voter rolls, Justice Jayant Nath of the Delhi High Court, called the bluff of the Badal Dal by citing the fact that at one of the recent meetings convened by the Directorate of Gurdwara Elections, the Badal Dal, officially known as Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi State),” had given its consent in the said meeting for revision of electoral rolls.”

The Paramjit Singh Sarna-led Shiromani Akali Dal Delhi had petitioned the court that the elections must be held in time.  One of the Sarna brothers’ duo Harvinder Singh Sarna has alleged that the 2017 DSGMC polls were rigged as the then Director Gurdwara Elections had given the Badal Dal a free run to use bogus votes to win the elections.

Even though the Directorate of Gurdwara Elections, in a clever manner, covered up their past inactions by telling the court that it was willing to prepare fresh voter rolls, but that would take almost a year, Delhi High Court judge Justice Jayant Nath, accepted their plea to carry out revisions within six months and permit them to carry out the necessary elections to the Committee.

Like in the past, this time around too, the Delhi High Court asked the Government of Delhi to ensure that fresh electoral rolls are prepared much in advance of the next elections in 2025.

Will the Badal Dal appeal this order in the Supreme Court of India by hiring expensive lawyers at the cost of the Sangat funds?  Will the Directorate of Gurdwara Elections start the electoral revision process without delay? This will determine the course of the DSGMC Elections 2021.

The Badal Dal seems to be pretty confident that it would get the elections delayed, hence their chief is busy with building the BJP platform at the Sikh expense and the executive committee is ignoring the Guru Harkrishan Public Schools stalemate.

Meanwhile, various opposition parties like the Paramjit Singh Sarna-led Shiromani Akali Dal Delhi, the Manjit Singh GK-led Jago Party, the Bhai Ranjit Singh-led Akal Sahai Welfare Society, the Baldev Singh Wadala-led Sadhbhawna Dal, the Aam Akali Dal and the Panthic Sewa Dal are out in the field enrolling members and scouting for candidates in 46 constituencies of Delhi.

Appealing to the Sikh electorate of Delhi, Harvinder Singh Sarna appealed to the Sikh Sangat to make fresh votes and fully participate in the electoral process.
