When the Indian nationals are underway in Gwalior early next year, don’t be surprised to see the bearded forward flicker Gursimran Singh.

God-fearing and devout Gursimran Singh has been playing hockey since childhood and has nurtured his game ball by ball on the grounds of S. S. Mota Singh School, Janakpuri, New Delhi.

Speaking to the World Sikh News, Masters in Business Administration Gursimran Singh said, “The changeover from Astroturf to grass in the near future as decided the International Hockey Federation will definitely infuse fresh blood into the old-school hockey game.”  “India and other Asian teams will definitely benefit from this change”, he added.

Watching the game in his school instilled love for the game when he was a child and since then, he has not looked back.  First representing the school while he was only in class seven, he became the captain of his school team as he reached the matriculation class. Representing the CBSE national team in 2011, he participated in the National school games in 2012.

As one of the youngest player in the tournament, he played in the Hockey India Junior National Championship in 2013 and represented India in the 44 Pesta Hockey Indoor Hockey Tournament in Malaysia in 2017.

Gursimran Singh loves to see Sabat Soorat Sikhs play hockey and is doing everything to promote the game. His campaign to distribute state-of-the-art hockey sticks to those who love the game but cannot afford the expense to organising hockey awareness meets, has endeared him to one and all.

“I am keen to strengthen grass roots hockey.”

He received an award as a national player from Member of Parliament Parvesh Verma in 2013 and was rewarded by Director Sports S. Mahabali Satpal for representing in the SGFI games.  He has been felicitated by many local clubs in Delhi and the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee.

Gursimran Singh is hopeful to make the Hockey India colours as he is being diligently mentored and coached by former India captain Rajpal Singh, World Cup Gold medallist Inderjit Chadha, Olympians Gurvinder Singh Chandi and Dharamvir Singh.

“Whatever I am today and whatever little I have achieved today is the Grace of God almighty, the untiring cooperation of my parents, the love of my associates and the sincere hard work of my coaches and mentors,” said Gursimran Singh, in his conversation with WSN.
