J & K Gurdwaras to celebrate Dasam Pita Purab on 5 January
State Gurdwara Parbandhak Board Jammu and Kashmir directs all district Gurdwaras to celebrate Dasam Pita Purab on 5 January and follow Mool Nanakshahi calendar.
In a communique on 16 November to all constituent Gurdwaras in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Tarlochan Singh Wazir -the President of the State Gurdwara Parbandhak Board Jammu and Kashmir has asked them to celebrate Gurpurab of Guru Gobind Singh on 5 January.
He has asked them to participate in Nagar Kirtan on 2 January in Jammu.
Speaking to World Sikh News, Tarlochan Singh Wazir said, “the decision to celebrate the Gurpurab of Guru Gobind Singh on 5 January has been conveyed to all Gurdwaras and they would celebrate accordingly.” He however added that Gurdwaras in rural areas may celebrate Gurpurab as per their convenience.

Media reports suggest that more than 90 percent of Gurdwaras in Jammu and Kashmir will follow the 5 January date and the Nanakshahi calendar. 11 Sikh organisations and Gurdwaras have decided to publish the Mool Nanakshahi calendar so that there is no confusion regarding Gurpurab and Sikh festival dates.
Gurdwara Parbandhak Committees of Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Tral and Anantnag are part of the District board. It is important to note that on 5 January banks in J & K are closed and so the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.
Gurdwaras in the state of Jammu and Kashmir are governed under the Jammu and Kashmir Sikh Gurdwaras and Religious Endowment Act, 1973. The management committee has also decided to follow the Mool Nanakshahi calendar in future to avert any confusion regarding dates.
