State Gur­d­wara Par­band­hak Board Jammu and Kash­mir di­rects all dis­trict Gur­d­waras to cel­e­brate Dasam Pita Purab on 5 Jan­u­ary and fol­low Mool Nanakshahi cal­en­dar.

In a com­mu­nique on 16 No­vem­ber to all con­stituent Gur­d­waras in the state of Jammu and Kash­mir, Tar­lochan Singh Wazir -the Pres­i­dent of the State Gur­d­wara Par­band­hak Board Jammu and Kash­mir has asked them to cel­e­brate Gur­purab of Guru Gob­ind Singh on 5 Jan­u­ary. 

He has asked them to par­tic­i­pate in Na­gar Kir­tan on 2 Jan­u­ary in Jammu. 

Speak­ing to World Sikh News, Tar­lochan Singh Wazir said, “the de­ci­sion to cel­e­brate the Gur­purab of Guru Gob­ind Singh on 5 Jan­u­ary has been con­veyed to all Gur­d­waras and they would cel­e­brate ac­cord­ingly.” He how­ever added that Gur­d­waras in rural ar­eas may cel­e­brate Gur­purab as per their con­ve­nience.

“The de­ci­sion to cel­e­brate the Gur­purab of Guru Gob­ind Singh on 5 Jan­u­ary has been con­veyed to all Gur­d­waras and they would cel­e­brate ac­cord­ingly.”

Me­dia re­ports sug­gest that more than 90 per­cent of Gur­d­waras in Jammu and Kash­mir will fol­low the 5 Jan­u­ary date and the Nanakshahi cal­en­dar. 11 Sikh or­gan­i­sa­tions and Gur­d­waras have de­cided to pub­lish the Mool Nanakshahi cal­en­dar so that there is no con­fu­sion re­gard­ing Gur­purab and Sikh fes­ti­val dates.

Gur­d­wara Par­band­hak Com­mit­tees of Sri­na­gar, Budgam, Bara­mulla, Kup­wara, Tral and Anant­nag are part of the Dis­trict board. It is im­por­tant to note that on 5 Jan­u­ary banks in J & K are closed and so the Jammu and Kash­mir High Court.

Gur­d­waras in the state of Jammu and Kash­mir are gov­erned un­der the Jammu and Kash­mir Sikh Gur­d­waras and Re­li­gious En­dow­ment Act, 1973. The man­age­ment com­mit­tee has also de­cided to fol­low the Mool Nanakshahi cal­en­dar in fu­ture to avert any con­fu­sion re­gard­ing dates.
