On a petition by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee to the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions, on behalf of the poor Sikhs of Shillong, a three-bench committee has ordered that status quo of the Guru Nanak School be maintained and the school authorities are not to be harassed. No attempt should be made to dislocate them from their present position in the Punjabi lane, Bara Bazar, Shillong.

Briefing the media, Jaswinder Singh Jolly, chairperson of the Law Wing of the DSGMC mentioned that at least for the present there is a stay on the dislocation of the school.

WSN learns that the DSGMC petition had pointed out that the Project Director of the Meghalaya Education Department had been unnecessarily harassing the school authorities and staff, even during school time by asking the officers of the State Education Mission Authority of Meghalaya to act against the Guru Nanak School on no grounds or on very flimsy grounds.

The petition further pointed out that the school was built and sponsored by the City Gurdwara Management Committee and it was primarily meant for the Sikh community though children of other communities also study there.  The school also served as a centre for imparting training in Sikh religious and cultural activities during the schools’ off hours.

The petition had further alleged that the District School Education Officer and the District Mission Coordinator had off late started harassing the school authorities and were forcing them to provide place to private educational company.
