Practical Sikhi through Kirtan Darbar
Catch them young -is the catchphrase of the organisers of the Gurmat School in Jakarta who make the students take over all Gurdwara activities in their hands. A peep into the Kirtan Darbar by a young participant.
Our monthly Kirtan Darbaar held on a Saturday once a month is arranged and hosted by Gurmat school students.
Four Jathas -groups, especially arranged by teachers take turn to perform Kirtan on stage in the Gurdwara Sahib with a new theme every month. Each Jatha consists of 20-25 students from the Nikke Tarre class (kids aged below 6) to the Guru Granth Sahib Reading Course Class, which is the highest class in our Gurmat School.
Every Jatha has two mentors who usually are alumni who have successfully learnt how to read from the Guru Granth Sahib. They assist youngsters in running the program and give them new ideas and advice for these monthly Kirtan programmes.
This Monthly Kirtan Darbar gives a chance to Gurmat School’s students to run a Kirtan program, where the students have to do Kirtan, make an inspirational session by reciting poems, tell a Sakhi to the Sangat about Sikh Gurus and Martyrs or even a short movie screening.
The students also do Ardas, read the Hukamnama. They also do Sukhasan Sewa of Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
This activity enables to learn, imbibe and understand Sikhi in a practical way. During the program, students gain new information, share with the Sangat and imbibe simple and effective ways of working as a team.
