Pun­jab Sum­mit con­demns po­lice crack­down in the Pun­jab

Gath­ered to dis­cuss var­i­ous so­cial, civil, and po­lit­i­cal is­sues con­cern­ing Pun­jab, lead­ers of 20 Sikh or­ga­ni­za­tions con­vened the Pun­jab Sum­mit in Am­rit­sar, strongly con­demned the se­cu­rity op­er­a­tion in the state to ar­rest Am­rit­pal Singh and as­so­ci­ates of Waris Pun­jab De. ORGAN­I­SA­TIONS par­tic­i­pat­ing in The Pun­jab Sum­mit lashed out at Pun­jab po­lice for a mas­sive crack­down on youth and ar­rest­ing them in large num­bers pri­mar­ily to in­still fear psy­chosis in the minds of the pop­u­la­tion of Pun­jab and Sikh youth in par­tic­u­lar.

“The sus­pen­sion of in­ter­net ser­vices and civil lib­er­ties us­ing ar­chaic laws is de­plorable.” read the joint state­ment of the Pun­jab Sum­mit. Equally de­plorable is the sus­pen­sion of in­ter­net ser­vices and civil lib­er­ties across the State.

“While the where­abouts of Am­rit­pal Singh is still a mys­tery and has cre­ated re­sent­ment and fears in the pub­lic do­main, the past his­tory of the no­to­ri­ety of the Pun­jab po­lice force and Union se­cu­rity forces is still fresh in our minds,” the state­ment added.

The Pun­jab Sum­mit de­manded the restora­tion of in­ter­net ser­vices and clear­ing the un­cer­tainty of ar­rests.

The or­gan­i­sa­tions which con­demned the se­cu­rity drag­net over Pun­jab, who par­tic­i­pated in the Dal Khalsa-led Pun­jab Sum­mit in­cluded SGPC, SAD (Am­rit­sar), Damdami Tak­sal, Ak­hand Kir­tani Jatha, Bhar­tiya Kisan Union (Kran­tikari), United Akali Dal, All In­dia Sikh Stu­dents Fed­er­a­tion, Stu­dents for So­ci­ety, SATH, Sikh Youth of Pun­jab, Sikh Siyasat, Akal Fed­er­a­tion, Panth Se­wak, Pun­jab Lawyers, Khalra Mis­sion or­gan­i­sa­tion, Voices for Free­dom and Ma­j­door Ad­hikar San­gathan.
