Relevance of Guru Nanak’s Vand Chhakkna

In her sweet little way, this student shares her understanding of Vand Chhakkna -sharing and giving in the present times.

What is Vand Chakana? Vand Chakana is one of the three main pillars of the teaching of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Vand Chakana means to share one’s wealth with others in the community, to give in charity, distribute langar, help others.

A Sikh is expected to donate and share at least ten percent of one’s average income which is known as Dasvandh.

Sharing in this way makes people believe that what one earns is by the will of God or Hukam. So, when one makes more money than he or she needs, then this should be shared with the community especially with the needy.

Here at the Gurmat School In Jakarta, every year during Gurpurab of Guru Nanak Dev ji we conduct our “Vand Chakna Program.” It is an effort from the school to give students a chance to learn more about sharing as one of the main teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. By sharing you not only make yourself feel better, but also makes others feel better.

Vand Chakna

Our Vand Chakkna is a great way to give back to our community. This program includes visiting orphanages, books distribution drives, visiting disabled children and spending time with them. Our students learn to be grateful to Waheguru who has given them a good life with good health and loving parents that many of the children they visited during these programs do not have.

We want our students to know that any contribution, even if it’s a small one, can help people and put smiles on their faces. We want our students to grow up to be caring individuals and responsible Sikhs.
