Sikh Journalism to make a mark
Sikh journalism in English is a rarity. Sikh journalists in English are a rare breed. The need for Sikh media in the English language is a long-felt one. There have been many attempts –some half-hearted, some serious, but somehow, no media in English at a country-level or international level has been able to survive for long or make a sustained impact.
Responding to the dire necessity to provide news and views with a Sikh perspective, without hype and without calling names and stooping to low levels –as seen today in many a Facebook post or Twitteratti, The World Sikh News is re-born on this day –1 Chet 549 Nanakshahi -the first day of the Sikh calendar -Nanakshahi Calendar.
The present The World Sikh News is perhaps the third avatar of the World Sikh News. One print edition started way back, thirty years ago in Canada and the United States to project the Sikh perspective following June 1984 historic developments in homeland Punjab and the Sikh Diaspora. Subsequently in the early years of this century, it was restarted in California both in print format and online.
Having been associated with the US edition as an editor, it was a painful closure nearly five years back. The itch to write and present a true Sikh perspective continued but took a back-seat to human rights, social work and education activism.
Developments within the community –in the homeland and the Diaspora keep happening demanding a say. Not able to resist any further putting off a truthful perspective, we are happy to launch The World Sikh News website to provide a Sikh perspective on stories regional, national and international which impact the Sikh world. We will not restrict only to this. We will gradually move to present views on global events which affect our lives and times.
The World Sikh News will perceive events through the prism of the faith community so that the community is proud of the media and the media keeps faith with the faith community. The World Sikh News team has a vision to build a world-class media, influencing and building the thought processes of the community and becoming a significant and effective tool of interventionist journalism.
We anxiously await your feedback, comments and more.
