When will we have a Michelle Wolf in India?

A daring, entertaining, irreverent speech catapults comedian Michelle Wolf centrestage, leaves the Washington press divided, die-hard feminists in disarray, while Trump rages with anger, support pouring in from the international media and the Indian media silent hardly interested.

Listen to the speech of star-comedian Michelle Wolf at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner as reported by the Washington Post.  A dinner party which is a regular annual dinner for years is not for thin-skinned people like Donald Trump and many of his ilk in India. Trump skipped it last year and this year too. When stung by Wolf, he called her names. Just could not take it. The reactions are crass and undemocratic.

It is interesting to see the independent US media divided on the subject. Some have apologised and others offered regrets. Did the rising star comedian Michelle Wolf indulge? In a 15-minute stand-up text comedy she tore apart the Trump presidency into pieces, spoofing every angle that was of interest to the people.  She landed centre-stage with her truthful, direct, though raunchy remarks which hurt those who were meant to be hurt. They actually shrieked in the aftermath. Donald Trump squeaked.

Speaking at the Annual White House Correspondents Dinner, attending by close to 3000 journalists, the lady comedian did not spare any one. Every second she was on stage, with her eyes and with her words, she brought the house down -some laughing, others awestruck and Press Secretary Sarah Sanders and the like dumbfounded. Or perhaps gritty enough to withhold the angst.

Think about it! In case we had such dinners, which Indian comedian would have the guts to speak against a chief minister or a minister or the Prime Minister while he or she is seated a few steps away.

I watched her speech on Washington Post two times, read the transcript of the speech and paused. I wondered, when will we have such dinners in India?  Which journalist body will take the lead to organise such a meet?

We have Iftar Parties in the Presidential Palace, which too has not been attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his team, lest they be seen as pro-Muslim.

Think about it! In case we had such dinners, which Indian comedian would have the guts to speak against a chief minister or a minister or the Prime Minister while he or she is seated a few steps away. Which one it could be, who would be perceived to have the gumption to do such a thing and would still be invited to such an event in Delhi or Lucknow, notwithstanding which party is sending in the invitation.

In India, the nearest somebody would come to Michelle Wolf would be the Urdu and Hindi comedy poets who would not hesitate to amuse their listeners with snide references, metaphoric and satirical snides at Indian leaders.

Michelle Wolf hit at everyone in the Trump administration, left, right and centre. I wish Kapil Sharma does a similar stand-up satire aimed at Narendra Modi rather than tom-tom with men dressing-up as women.
